A team of Ford engineers has announced plans to drive the Ford Fusion Hybrid car over 1,000 miles without refuelling.
The company is undertaking the challenge as part of plans to promote the benefits of hybrid vehicles and highlight the role drivers can play in minimising emissions by improving driving efficiency.
The vehicle to be used in the challenge is a standard Fusion Hybrid model with no modifications or alterations, and will run on 87 octane fuel.
During initial testing, Ford engineers were able to achieve 70mpg by using eco-driving techniques such as slowing down throttle pressure and minimising excessive engine workload.
According to the group, the car needs to average at least 57mpg over 43 hours to reach its 1,000 mile target.
The challenge will take place this weekend in Mount Vernon, Vancouver and is expected to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
