ICT specialist Huawei commits £1.3bn to UK expansion plans

Huawei is to invest £650m and spend another £650m in procurement in the UK over the next five years.

In a meeting with prime minister David Cameron, Ren Zhengfei, founder and chief executive officer of ICT specialist Huawei, outlined the company’s long-term commitment to the UK through investment in research and development, local procurement and centre-of-excellence initiatives.

Huawei already employs more than 800 people in the UK and has committed to increasing its workforce to more than 1,500 by 2017.

As part of this commitment, Huawei — which works with all the major telecommunication operators and broadband service providers in the UK — will invest in a number of global centres of technical and financial excellence in the UK.

Zhengfei said: ‘The UK is a centre of innovation, has a highly skilled workforce, and is respected internationally for the quality of its legal and educational systems.

‘It is for these reasons we have selected the UK as the location for a number of our centres of excellence.’
