The Japanese firm High Performance Plastics, part of
Sekisui Chemical, has developed Mutelayer ML, a high performance noise insulation foaming material for automobiles.
Made of cross-linked polyolefin foam mixed with a special packing material, the company claims that the new product boasts approximately four times the noise barrier performance of conventional cross-linked polyolefin-made materials.
What is more, it is about 45% lighter than sound insulating rubber sheets while delivering the same level of performance.
The company says that because of the ease with which the new material can be moulded, it can be used in parts of an automobile where conventional insulation cannot reach.
The product will go on sale in April 2006.
