JDS Uniphase buys lasers

JDS Uniphase is to acquire Lightwave Electronics, the solid-state laser developer, in an all cash transaction for $65 million.

, the solid-state laser developer, in an all cash transaction for $65 million.

Founded in 1984, Lightwave developed the world’s first Diode Pumped Laser (DPL) system.

Since then, it has gone on to provide Continuous Wave (CW), Q-Switched and Mode-Locked products that are typically integrated into larger systems by its customers.

The company itself is privately held employs around 120 people, and is based in Mountain View, CA.

The acquisition, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to be completed in the second calendar quarter of this year.
