More power for China

Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) of

has received a €100 million order from the China Southern Power Grid Company in

to construct an additional high-voltage direct current transmission (HVDC) link in southeast

.

The new overhead HVDC transmission line - dubbed Guizhou-Guangdong II and scheduled to come online in 2007 - will eventually provide 3000 MW of electricity from hydro and coal-fired power plants in the west of the country to the industrial centres of Guangdong Province some 1225 km away.

Siemens has already built three HVDC transmission systems in China, one of which, Guizhou-Guangdong I, entered service at the end of September 2004.

As well as supplying the HVDC technology, the converter transformers and other key components for the project, Siemens will also be responsible for the engineering and installation of the link.

Siemen’s says

is the fastest growing market in the field of power transmission and distribution and will become the world’s largest single market for HVDC transmission technology over the next 20 to 30 years.
