ABB has announced that it is to implement its Network Manager supervisory control and data acquisition/energy management system (SCADA/EMS) technology in the US for National Grid.
National Grid will deploy the system in its up-state New York and New England electric operations control centres to manage the transmission and distribution networks in the region.
This will facilitate a common platform for system support and operations, which ABB claimed will improve efficiency and maintain a reliable and secure system.
ABB will provide design, engineering, software, hardware, system implementation and related services.
The Network Manager platform includes the SCADA system, advanced power system applications, a user interface with advanced visualisation and situational awareness and a fully integrated operator training simulator.
It also has system integration capabilities, including the use of a common information model (CIM) and full system redundancy, and can be expanded if required.
National Grid currently owns more than 4,000MW of contracted electricity generation capacity in the US, delivering electricity to around 3.3 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island. It also manages the electricity network on Long Island.
