New gas turbine down under

Alinta has awarded Rolls-Royce a contract to provide a Trent 60 gas turbine at its new Tamar Valley Power Station on the Tamar River, Tasmania.

The Trent 60 Wet Low Emissions (WLE) dual-fuel electrical generating set will operate in a simple-cycle plant providing 58MW of electrical power as part of a new 180MW gas turbine installation that will provide back-up electricity as necessary.

The turbine is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2008, with electricity production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2009.

The Tamar Valley site is said to be a prime spot for further power generation development as it is close to the Tasmanian gas pipeline and high voltage electricity transmission lines, and has access to a cooling water supply.
