Nuclear facility set for South Yorkshire

A £25m Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) is to be based in South Yorkshire alongside Sheffield University’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Rolls-Royce as the lead industrial partner.

Funding for the project comprises £15m from the Department of Business, Industry and Skills and £10m from the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward.

The NAMRC is expected to draw together some 30 high-tech manufacturing suppliers. The goal is to redevelop and re-energise an internationally recognised UK nuclear supply chain. Support for training, simulation and modelling will be provided by the National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC).

Rolls-Royce has said that it intends — in principle — to base a civil nuclear factory in South Yorkshire. The factory is part of an investment programme that Rolls-Royce announced in July this year, which included £45m of investment from the UK government.

Prof Keith Ridgway, research director at the AMRC, will take the role of programme director at the NAMRC.
