R&D boost for GrantRail

Yorkshire Forward has awarded Doncaster-based railway engineers GrantRail a £486,000 R&D grant to develop a system that will help to improve track quality and reduce delays for rail passengers.

a £486,000 research and development grant to develop a system that will help to improve track quality and reduce delays for rail passengers.

GrantRail will work with Inditherm, using their patented heating technology, and Sheffield Hallam University on the research and development project.

GrantRail will use the investment to develop a uniform heating system to heat rail tracks during installation and welding when tracks are being replaced.

GrantRail believes this method will improve track quality by reducing inconsistent stresses in the railway track. Inconsistent stress in rail tracks can result in buckling and rail breakages which in some cases cause rail derailments.

If successful, the knock-on effects of the project for rail passengers could be fewer delays and improved safety.

This method will also contribute to GrantRail's ability to complete all the work required for renewing rails in less time than has previously been the case. This will cause less timetable disruption and train delays.
