Australian scientists have developed a prototype remote-controlled robotic vehicle to detect radiation.
The concept vehicle, known as RASP, for Remote Advanced Sensor Platform, was developed jointly by the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), part of Australia's Department of Defence, and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
The robot itself is small and light and can be operated from distances of up to 350 metres. It could be deployed in almost any area or location, from aircraft to cargo containers.
The robot is intended for use by Australian national security agencies. Officers who detect the presence of radiation with handheld instruments will send in the RASP to more accurately identify the type of radioactive material present.
Trials of the new robot will take place at ANSTO this year.
