Rolls-Royce upgrades turbines

 has received an order to upgrade a further six Avon 200 industrial gas turbines from

for their fleet in the Fateh gas field. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The upgrade, which builds on the previous order for four turbines, will bring half the Fateh fleet up to the new standard.

According to Rolls-Royce, the new turbines will use technologies from the Trent and EJ200 aero engine designs including reduced fuel burn and better mechanical design to reduce life-cycle costs. The company believes the new turbines will deliver a 10 per cent increase in power, improve thermal efficiency by 5.3 per cent and reduce CO₂ emissions compared with in-service Avon engines.

The conversion of the engines will be carried out by the Rolls Wood Group, a 50/50 joint venture between Rolls-Royce and John Wood, at their Aberdeen facility.

‘We have already converted six Avons for operators in Norway, Dubai and Brazil following the successful trials of a development engine on a major gas pipeline in Canada,’ said Keith Brady, managing director of Rolls Wood. ‘The same development engine also underwent hot weather trials in Dubai prior to the order from Dubai Petroleum.’
