Ship design contract

Finnish marine propulsion company Wärtsilä has received a ship design order from Norwegian shipping company Sartor Shipping for two Vik-Sandvik 465 FSV design vessels.

Under the contract, Wärtsilä will also supply two main engines, gear boxes and propellers for the vessels, which will be built at the Wison Heavy Industry shipyard in China and are due for delivery in 2010 and 2011. Sartor Shipping has options for further new-builds at the yard.

According to Wärtsilä , the Vik-Sandvik 465 FSV design incorporates a hybrid system that offers considerable fuel savings compared to a purely diesel mechanical solution. This is because the available power can be adjusted to meet the demands of the different operations that this type of vessel will be used for. The greatest savings should be achieved at lower power loads.

The multi-function vessels are designed to be used for a variety of tasks, including offshore standby service, emergency towing, oil spill recovery, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) operations, firefighting, tanker assistance and surface surveillance.
