Siemens builds Bavarian power plant

(PG) is constructing a turnkey combined cycle power plant in Irsching, Bavaria, Germany for Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Irsching in a deal worth €450 million.

Gemeinschaftskraftwerk Irsching is jointly owned by power supply company E.ON Kraftwerke and multi-utility companies N-ERGIE and Mainova.

The order includes a long-term maintenance contract for the plant. The combined cycle power plant will have a capacity of 800MW, sufficient to power a city the size of Cologne with nearly one million inhabitants.

Siemens PG is building the new natural gas-fired power plant on the site of an existing power plant in Irsching near Ingolstadt. The company is supplying the gas and steam turbines, the generators, the complete mechanical engineering with heat recovery steam generator and the electrical and control systems. The “Irsching 5” plant is scheduled to go into service at the end of 2008.

“This order underscores our cooperation as partners with E.ON,” said Klaus Voges, president of the Siemens Power Generation Group. Siemens PG is currently building a prototype plant for the world’s largest and most powerful gas turbine in Irsching. After successful trial operation, it will be developed into a high-efficiency combined cycle power plant with a capacity of 530 MW and handed over to E.ON. The company also is constructing the largest biomass-fired power plant in the United Kingdom for E.ON UK in Lockerbie, Scotland.
