Thales UK announced that it has signed contracts with Belfast International and Cardiff airports for the supply, installation and maintenance of a surveillance radar system.
The installation will include two solid-state radars and Eurocat air-traffic control (ATC) systems. The Thales STAR 2000 primary-surveillance radar and co-mounted RSM 970 S Mode S MSSR secondary-surveillance radar will feed data into the Thales Eurocat-C ATC centre.
Belfast International and Cardiff airports are owned by Abertis Airports, which manages British airport operator TBI through a company owned 90 per cent by Abertis and 10 per cent by Aena Internacional. TBI’s network currently covers a total of eight international airports. The three in the United Kingdom are London Luton, Cardiff and Belfast International.
Marion Broughton, managing director of Thales UK’s air systems business, said the technology being installed at Belfast International and Cardiff airports is already in use at Inverness Airport.
‘Belfast International specifically requested a very demanding delivery schedule,’ he said. ‘Based on previous experience Thales was able to commit to this requirement with a commissioned, flight-tested and safety-approved radar, which was a key factor in the final decision.’
