Toyota’s £88m investment in Wales

Toyota has announced a £88m investment in its plant in Deeside, north Wales, with the introduction of a new four-cylinder 1.3L petrol engine.

The Deeside plant produces fully-assembled petrol engines for Toyota’s manufacturing plant at Bumaston, Derbyshire. It also undertakes casting and machining of engine sets for export to Toyota’s international plants, including those in Brazil, France and South Africa, for local assembly.

Welsh first minister Rhodri Morgan said: ‘The fact that Toyota has chosen to develop these new engines in North Wales is testament to the skills of the local workforce and the assistance given to the company by the Assembly Government for the development of new engine technology.’

Production of the new engine is scheduled for late 2009.
