This order is part of an option under a contract signed in January 2008 for the delivery of 18 X’Trapolis trainsets.

Following the exercise of this option, the number of trains to be delivered to the State of Victoria has increased to 38 six-coach trainsets.

The delivery of the trains is set to begin in the last quarter of 2010. These six-car trainsets will be added to the existing City of Melbourne fleet, where 58 three-coach X’Trapolis trainsets produced by Alstom have been in operation since 2002.

Alstom said in a statement that the order strengthens its presence in Melbourne, where it has already supplied 36 Citadis trams.
