Typhoon Availability Service

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded a £450m contract to BAE Systems to supply and maintain the RAF’s fleet of Typhoon aircraft.

The five-year contract, known as Typhoon Availability Service (TAS), is expected to create 150 new jobs at BAE and secure a further 350 at its peak.

Building on previous partnership agreements, the TAS agreement intends to ensure a cost-effective solution to increase availability of the aircraft, which has been used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) since July 2008.

Chris Boardman, managing director of Typhoon Mission Support & International Programmes at BAE Systems, said: ‘Signature of the TAS contract is the culmination of 18 months of intense work by a joint BAE Systems/UK MoD team. Through-life support is a potential area of growth for BAE Systems and we are already looking to accelerate the deployment of this capability and expertise across our global business.’

Around 200 BAE Systems employees are working on the TAS agreement at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire and the company’s Samlesbury and Warton sites. The total number of employees is set to increase to 500 over the course of the contract.
