UK leads the charge for plug-in car sales

UK demand for plug-in vehicles has reached record levels according to new registration data from the SMMT.

The Latest data from car industry trade body, the SMMT, shows a booming UK appetite for plug in vehicles.

According to analysis of the data carried out by campaign group Go Ultra Low, more than 20,992 motorists bought a plug-on car during the first nine months of this year, a rise of 138.5% against last year’s figures.

This increased customer demand is fuelled in part, says the group, by a greater choice of models, with more than 27 pure electric or plug-in hybrid cars now available in the UK.

The biggest area of growth is in plug-in hybrids with 14,041 new registrations this year representing a growth of 226.5% on 2014.

Head of Go Ultra Low, Poppy Welch, said, “The growth in plug-in car registrations is excellent news and in line with our expectations. This trend should continue over the course of this year as we know that motorists are keen to achieve maximum miles for the lowest cost, while minimising emissions and environmental impact.”
