US services order Qinetiq targeting systems

Qinetiq North America has announced that the US Army and the US Marine Corps are to purchase tens of thousands of its SWATS (Shoulder-Worn Acoustic Targeting System).

Weighing less than 1lb, the system gives soldiers the ability to rapidly acquire the distance and absolute position of snipers or other combatants firing upon them in less than one second.

Qinetiq North America developed SWATS in response to concerns about the high toll of small-arms fire on military forces.

The US Army selected SWATS for its Individual Gunfire Detection System (IGDS) programme, with an initial order for 13,500 units under an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract for up to 30,000 units and training support.

The US Marine Corps also selected SWATS for its Man Wearable Gunfire Detection System (MWGDS) programme, with an order for more than 900 units and training support.

In addition to the US military, SWATS has also been deployed with allied forces.
