Weapons in sight
BAE Systems has been awarded a contract worth $183m to supply thermal weapon sights for the US Army, and to increase production rates to 3,000 units per month.
The order is the first under a five-year indefinite deliver/indefinite quantity contract that could reach $1bn.
BAE Systems says that its microbolometre thermal imaging technology increases the warfighter’s surveillance and target acquisition capabilities because it enables them to see in all weather conditions, day and night.
The Thermal Weapon Sights II (TWS-II) were designed for small arms, surveillance and fire control applications ranging from individual rifles to medium and heavy machine guns and mounted weapon systems.
BAE Systems has supplied more than 11,000 TWS-II to the army.
