Exar buys into Infineon

Infineon and Exar Corporation today entered into an agreement in which Exar will acquire a significant part of Infineon's Optical Networking Business Unit.

today entered into an agreement in which Exar will acquire a significant part of Infineon's Optical Networking(ON) Business Unit.

The acquisition includes assets relating to multi-rate TDM framer products, Fibre Channel over SONET/SDH, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), as well as certain intellectual property for Data Over SONET products. The transaction is expected to close shortly.

The existing MetroMapper family of Ethernet over Sonet products will remain part of Infineon's product line.

“Following the sale of a significant part of our Fibre Optics group, the Optical Networking sale is yet another step towards our overall commitment to streamlining our business activities to focus on our core markets in wireless and broadband access communication,” commented Loh Kin Wah, Member of Infineon's Management Board.

In February, Infineon disclosed that it was to phase out chip manufacturing at its Munich Perlach facility by early 2007, affecting some 800 employees there. Production from Munich Perlach will be transferred to its other facilities in Regensburg and Villach.
