The Netherlands Defence Telematics Organisation (DTO) has awarded Siemens Business Services and Getronics PinkRoccade a contract to provide ID cards for the Dutch Ministry of Defence. The total value of the order is approximately €18m.

The Defence ID card is used to establish the identity of the cardholder, allowing employees physical access to buildings and certain ICT systems areas.

In addition to authentication, the PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) functionality of the card is also used for signing documents in a legally valid manner and sending them securely by e-mail.

According to the planning schedule, the system will be operational in a year. Getronics PinkRoccade will provide one-stop managed PKI services whilst Siemens Business Services will be responsible for system integration.
