A team comprising Bechtel, Halcrow, and Systra has been selected this week by Crossrail to manage the delivery of the central London tunnel from West London, through Paddington, and branching to the North and South of Whitechapel.

The tunnel forms part of the new Crossrail network that will run 118km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, through twin-bore 21km tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East.

The central tunnel section alone will be the largest construction project in Europe.

The project will also involve the construction of six stations, which will bring an additional 1.5m people within 60 minutes’ commuting distance of London’s key business districts.

Preparatory works will continue throughout this year, with the main construction starting in 2010.

The Crossrail network is scheduled to open for service in 2017.
