In reference to Andrew Porter, another reason UK car manufacture failed was the wayward and unco-operative trade unions, combined with government interference, (remember the queues of new Hillman Imps with failed clutches?).
The Japanese introduced a measure of discipline in manufacturing; supervisors and such wore overalls and, I understand, ate in the same canteen as the rest.
