If you heat up the Earth under its evergrowing CO2 blanket, it will get hotter still (A trip to Fusion Island, 31 October). This is basic thermodynamics.
So it is madness to put in any effort, let alone infrastructure into fusion (or any other project) which adds to the heating of the planet.
The only way to achieve any degree of climate stability is to use the energy which is already coming into the Earth’s boundary layer from the Sun and Moon. We must harness wave, wind, tide, plant and solar energy for our needs.
Interestingly, it may be that we need to find ways to cool the Earth as well — perhaps by Man-made solar reflective clouds — because we have in just 150 years unwittingly blown 150 million years’ worth of fossil fuel up into the sky. And it is not going to come down again — ever.
Engineers must work it out. The last thing we need is anything which adds heat to the equation. If we can’t understand it, how can you expect politicians to do so.
