Power Plant gets the Web

Emerson Process Management  has received a contract to install its PlantWeb digital plant architecture with the Ovation expert control system in Units 1 and 2 of the new Vietnam Haiphong Power Plant.

Dongfang Electric, the project's EPC contractor, selected Emerson to automate the two 300-MW units, which comprise the first phase of the Haiphong project. Emerson's Power & Water Solutions industry centre will coordinate and supervise the project.

The plant, owned by Hai Phong Thermal Power Joint Stock, is located in the Thuy Nguyen District, Haiphong Province. When all four 300-MW coal-fired units are operational, the plant will be the largest coal-fired power generation facility in Vietnam, and will play a key role in meeting the increasing demand for power in North Vietnam, estimated to be growing at 15 percent annually primarily due to burgeoning economic development in the region.

Unit 1 is slated begin commercial operation June 2008, Unit 2 is expected to go into service six months later.

For Haiphong, Emerson’s  PlantWeb solution includes deployment of the Ovation control system for data acquisition, as well as for monitoring and control of the sequence control system, furnace safeguard supervisory system, and electrical control system for all major plant components, including the boiler, turbine, flue gas desulphurisation system and balance of plant processes.

In all, the Ovation solution, which will include the installation of a total of 36 Ovation redundant controllers and 26 workstations, will manage more than 24,000 I/O points.

In addition, Emerson will provide AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager asset management software for each unit, which will provide operators with data from HART intelligent field devices located throughout the plant.

For new plant construction, AMS Device Manager streamlines device configuration and commissioning, and also provides online access to instrument and valve diagnostics and automatic documentation of all field device maintenance information.
