Search begins for next wave of car stars

Applications for the 2017 Autocar Courland Next Generation Award are now open, with the organisers seeking out the latest crop of automotive talent.

The competition, open to 17-25 year olds, will challenge entrants to submit an innovative automotive idea in one of five categories: mobility, connectivity, sustainability, customer experience, or marketing & communication. This year’s winner will receive £9,000 in prize money, as well as a six-month work experience programme with competition sponsors Jaguar Land Rover, McLaren Automotive, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, and Horiba Mira.

“Now in its ninth year, the award is an established fast-track for talented young adults wishing to kick-start dream careers in the automotive industry,” said Steve Cropley, Autocar editor-in-chief and head judge of the competition.

“Year after year, the judges and I are consistently amazed both by the standard and ingenuity of the entries and we look forward to seeing a multitude of new cross-category ideas coming through in 2017.”

Last year’s competition was won by Sussex University’s Josh de Wit, who impressed the judges with his design for a stacked graphene battery. Other previous winners of the award have gone on to have successful careers in the automotive industry, securing design and engineering positions at JLR, Aston Martin and McLaren.

Martin Bohling, global managing partner at Courland Automotive, commented: “We support this Autocar Courland Award because it offers an unparalleled opportunity for the bright industry leaders of tomorrow to gain first-hand experience of what it’s truly like to work with some of the best known automotive brands in the world.”

The deadline for 2017 entries is August 29th. Six finalists will present their ideas to a panel of judges in November, with the winner announced during the annual SMMT dinner at the end of that month. Further information on the award and how to enter can be found here.
