Sheffield company retains key certification for nuclear manufacture

Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd (SFIL) has come through an intense audit to retain its coveted ASME status as a key supplier of heavy forgings and castings to the civil nuclear power market.

SFIL, which is a key supplier to the UK defence industry, should receive its three year requalification next month, after an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) audit unreservedly recommended re-approval to the Code Survey Committee.

As a result of the successful audit, SFIL will retain its place at the forefront of global nuclear power production.

Dave Street, group quality director, at SFIL, said, “The audit was intense and thorough, but we also found it very helpful and constructive. It was a high profile audit which helped to further hone the quality systems and as a result will naturally add value to the business.

“The audit team were very appreciative of the help and efforts of all the Forgemasters team in helping the audit to a successful conclusion.

“This close and detailed involvement with ASME has been significant in helping to build strong relationships with nuclear customers worldwide, and has enabled us to stay at the peak of the global supply chain for civil nuclear manufacturing.”

Forgemasters initially gained ASME accreditation as a Nuclear Materials Organisation in 1992, and since then, has been subject to unannounced audits annually and a full quality systems survey every three years.

SFIL will now continue its work on manufacturing the entire nuclear island for projects including power plants, and nuclear submarines for the British Navy.

The ASME certification has also allowed Forgemasters to create 16-tonne reactor coolant pump castings for two new-wave AP1000TM power plants in China. The castings will also feature on all future AP1000 plants globally.

Covering 64-acres, SFIL is one of only 14 large scale open die forging companies in the world and the only one of its kind in the UK. It has the largest forging and foundry facilities in the UK.

The company, which is the world’s only independently-owned forgemaster, continues to supply an increasing global demand for high quality engineered products to key industries such as defence, nuclear, oil and gas exploration, power generation, marine and construction.
