, Siemens will be responsible for round-the-clock maintenance of baggage handling logistics for the next three years. Together the orders are worth more than €11 million.

For Terminal 2 of Milan's Malpensa airport, Siemens has won an order worth €5,000,000 from airport operator SEA to expand the baggage handling system. The core elements of the project are to provide 100 per cent x-raying of baggage and increased reliability of the whole system with a sorting rate of roughly 2,000 suitcases per hour. The system will come on stream in two phases, in June 2006 and in the spring of 2007.

At S. Angelo Airport, Treviso, Siemens I&S has won an order from airport operators AER.TRE to expand the baggage handling system. The contract also includes 100 per cent hold baggage screening and one year of maintenance.

Some 6.5 million passengers a year use Marco Polo Airport in Venice. Siemens I&S will be responsible for full service and maintenance of the baggage handling system over a period of three years.

The system, which was installed by Siemens in 2002, includes 62 check-in desks, three kilometres of conveyor belts with a throughput of 4,000 pieces of baggage per hour and a total of seven baggage x-ray systems. Thanks to a remote monitoring and diagnostics system, spare parts supply and an IT-supported maintenance system, Siemens aims to provide permanent availability based on an agreed performance level.
