TCT Bright Minds UK Mentor Programme
Inspiring Tomorrow’s Engineers

Cheshire, UK, 21st July 2008: In a bid to inspire young engineers of the future, The TCT Magazine is delighted to announce the launch of the TCT Bright Minds UK Mentor Programme.

The aim of the TCT Bright Minds UK, based on a programme run by the SME in the USA, is to motivate and inspire a group of specially selected secondary school students — potentially tomorrow’s engineers — to enter a career in the world of engineering when they finish their studies.

This year, ten students, from King Edward VI College Stourbridge, will be invited to the TCT 2008 Conference & Exhibition, held at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, 21/22 October, where they will each be assigned to a mentor. These industry experts will guide them through the exhibition explaining the various aspects of advanced design and manufacturing technologies, materials, processes and applications on show at the event. This will give students the opportunity to ask questions and learn from their mentors and the exhibitors . It is hoped that this opportunity will help influence the career options of the students involved and inspire young people to see engineering as an exciting and cutting-edge industry to work in.

Jan Syska, Teacher in Design Technology at King Edward VI College, said, “Bright Minds UK is an excellent scheme for our Product Design students to learn about a wide range of cutting edge rapid prototype technologies. Working with their mentors they will gain first hand experience that will be very valuable to them in their A-level studies and will also provide them with a better understanding of the opportunities available in engineering.”

Duncan Wood, Sales & Marketing Director at Rapid News Publications plc, publishers of The TCT Magazine and organisers of the TCT 2008 Event commented, “As an industry we are in a unique position to influence the choices these students make. TCT showcases the exciting and cutting edge aspects of today’s engineering world and by engaging with students at an early stage and introducing them to these technologies hopefully we can encourage this next generation of school leavers to choose engineering as a career”

“With more and more companies choosing to source design and manufacturing overseas we believe we can play a part in reversing this trend. Although we have a small number of students involved from one school this year we plan to build on this in 2009 and welcome approaches from other educational establishments who may wish to get involved next year.”

“By investing in these young people our industry can ensure that the UK remains a centre of excellence for innovation and design, and hopefully the TCT Bright Minds Programme can help discover the next Brunel, Stephenson or Dyson.”
