Team growth at Minima Design

Prospering product design consultancy Minima Design has announced several new positions at the company this month.

Technical Director

Following a restructuring to accommodate new innovations in the field of design, the new role of Technical Director has been appointed to Nigel Blair, a shareholder in the company and its former engineering development manager.

Describing Nigel as a ‘Technical Guru’, Alastair Kingsland, Minima’s design director commented: “We need a technical director of Nigel’s calibre to focus on design development and innovation to meet the demands of the company which is maturing as the number of clients increases.  Nigel’s vast technical expertise and knowledge means he is ideally placed to develop technical innovations and introduce them to the consultancy’s portfolio of skills.”

Nigel has been with Minima for 7 years. He recently introduced the EXAscan portable, 3D scanner in anticipation of the growing need for reverse engineering in the UK.

Workshop Manager

Richard Carr-Beasley has been promoted to the role of Workshop Manager at the company.
 “ Richard has shown exceptional talent in both traditional model making and high precision machining. ” explains Alastair Kingsland, “ His expertise with engineering software means he is highly capable of producing prototypes in a wide range of materials -  essential as the company pushes into new design arenas. “                             

In his new role, Richard has responsibility for managing all workshop projects.  We believe this will be the ideal opportunity for him to use his experience in working for large, multinational clients on projects requiring the ability to prove innovative design solutions through precision prototyping.

Richard explains “We usually have around 5 to 7 projects on the go simultaneously and are currently working on new developments for BT which are very much orientated to the kind of innovations often showcased on ‘The Gadget Show’. 
 
Richard, who specialises in 3D model design, originally joined Minima in 2004 after graduating from Suffolk College in Ipswich where he worked in liaison with Guinness to develop an animatronic Toucan as part of his final thesis.  Richard will also be working with Nigel Blair, developing his scanning skills with the EXAscan and developing applications for the 3D scanning service offered by Minima.
                                   
Product Designer

Finally, new to the Minima team, Sam Grainger has joined as a product designer. We are very pleased that Sam Grainger brings his formidable engineering design and innovation background to the role of product designer.” remarks Alastair Kingsland. 

Specialising in design for manufacture, Sam graduated from Brunel University in 2006 with a BA in Industrial Design and Technology, after developing a stowable, aluminium tender for yachts.

Sam comments, “After working on highly innovative electromechanical product design and production and the manufacturing systems to support these activities, Minima’s

range of clients presents a fresh challenge where I can bring a new perspective to the team as well as grow my own experience in the sector.”

Sam is working as part of the 12 strong design team at Minima which month on month in 2008, has seen an uplift in income from project design related consultancy.

With the introduction in the next few months of the company’s in-house blow moulding facility, Minima is increasing its professional capabilities all round, adding value and skills for clients’ purposes. It is expected that further appointments will be made in coming months.
