Technip to treat iron-filled soil

Eramet, a mining and metallurgical group, has awarded Paris-based Technip a contract to carry out engineering studies, and assuming approval, general contracting services for a laterite treatment plant in Indonesia.

The plant, to be built on the island of Halmahera, will be based on a hydro-metallurgic process developed by Eramet, and is expected to produce 60,000 tonnes of nickel and 3,500 tonnes of cobalt per year.

According to Technip, the total investment on the project will amount to $2bn, with the plant scheduled to enter operations in 2013.

Technip’s divisions in Paris, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta will perform the work on this contract.
