The Edgware Road substation is part of a plan to upgrade the power supply to the underground’s railway lines and support the introduction of rolling stock.
ABB will design, supply, install and commission the substation and will also supply products that include 22 and 11kV switchboards, as well as coupling transformers.
The Zurich-headquartered company will also install approximately 20km of 22 and 11kV power cable in tunnels and ducts. Power-quality studies will also be carried out as part of the project, which is due to be completed in 2012.
London Underground’s Circle, District, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines are due to receive the trains by mid 2010. They will replace ageing rolling stock, increase capacity and introduce air conditioning and electronic signage.
