Thales secures Greek metro

Ansaldo, the company leading the consortium selected to build the Thessaloniki metro system in Greece, has awarded Thales an additional €10.5m contract for communication systems.

Thales will supply the centralised control and telecommunications systems to be installed on the automated metro line. The contract covers system design, integration, supervision and through-life support for a period of three years.

Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, is building a fully automated, driverless metro system. The first line, which will cover 10km and include 13 stations, is expected to carry an estimated 18,000 passengers per day. The metro is scheduled to enter service in 2012.

Thales will supply security and supervision equipment for the metro, including all the subsystems and the centralised control and supervision system. This includes traffic management and passenger information equipment along the line and in stations, plus internal telecommunications.

Thales will also supply transmission systems to connect station infrastructure to the central control room, CCTV to provide video-surveillance on trains and at stations and positioning and timing synchronisation of the different systems.
