This week’s video comes from Apple, which has spent the past three years developing a machine to recycle the contents of its iPhones.
The result is Liam, a system claimed to disassemble an iPhone 6 every 11 seconds to metals including aluminium, copper, tin, tungsten, cobalt, gold and silver.
I am quite sure Liam is NOTHING like what is in the video.
There is an irony in this, that the phones being recycled a re iPhone 6 models (i.e. the latest model) – I’ve only just stopped using my iPhone 4 and it will probably be used by a family member. Why are these iPhone 6’s being discarded in the first place and not being refurbished for re-use? That is far more environmentally friendly. However, the cynic in me would say that it is obviously not in Apple’s interests to refurbish old phones as it would reduce the sales of new phones.
Publications around April 1 shall be approached with caution.
