Underwater cables for DONG

Nexans has signed a contract with DONG energy to supply 70km of medium voltage subsea power cables to the Horns Rev 2 wind farm. The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The cables will be used to interconnect the 91 wind turbines as well as the central offshore transformer station, and will be laid in depths of between nine and 18m.

The companies previously worked together on the Horns Rev 1 wind farm, where Nexans supplied and installed all the subsea cables.

Nexans will provide the cables in three different diameters and power accessories, manufactured in their plants in Germany and Norway, as well as installation services.

The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2009, with deliveries starting in April 2008 and installation due to start in June 2008.

Nexans are also supplying the high-voltage subsea cable to connect the wind farm, which is approximately 27km from the west coast of Denmark, with the Danish onshore power grid.

The completed farm will generate around 210MW, roughly the amount of electricity consumed by 230,000 homes.
