We need humans not more cameras

Cameras that will detect when a crime is happening and alert the police is a bit worrying.

I am all for the advance of technology, but your story ‘Crime watch’ about the cameras that will detect when a crime is happening and alert the police is a bit worrying.

Cameras are increasingly seen as the answer to all our social problems, but the massive growth of CCTV systems in every town and city centre has hardly made them safer places on a typical evening.

Their main function seems to be to provide evidence for catching criminals after an offence has taken place.

This is fine as far as it goes, but is not much use to the victims at the time.

As for these new cameras being able to decide that it is ‘more likely’ that a crime is taking place, I just can’t see how that would work. All this seems to be doing is providing another inadequate replacement for human police officers on our streets.

This is one area where technology is not the answer.
