Web app developer receives creative content investment

UK web application developer Masher has become the latest recipient of investment from Northern Film & Media and Northstar Ventures’ Finance for Business – North East Creative Content Fund.

Masher will receive a £250,000 cash injection from the fund, enabling the business to expand its operations by establishing a base in the north east. The company plans to recruit north-east talent and has taken premises in the Gateshead International Business Centre.

The Masher application allows users to create a video in seconds by ’mashing’ together different videos, photos, music, and digital effects. Users can then share their video mash instantly with their friends by publishing it straight to social network sites, such as Facebook and MySpace, or by sending it via e-mail.

Masher was originally developed by BBC Motion Gallery, the video archive unit of BBC Worldwide. Within three months of launch, Masher was asked by MindShare and YouTube to assist with an ad campaign that was then awarded Digital Ad Campaign of the Year 2009.

Funding from Northern Film & Media and Northstar Ventures sees the agency and venture capital firm join existing backers IBIS Capital, BBC Worldwide, Mallesons Finance and private investor Tom Singh.
