The five-year contract calls for Parsons to fund, develop, and operate the system – trademarked as Opti-Fi – sharing revenue with VIA Rail once the system becomes profitable.
The system will combine satellite communications, cellular communications and Wi-Fi technology to allow rail passengers to experience continuous Wi-Fi access while on board.
Parsons will provide 22 stations, all VIA1 and Comfort Class cars, and all seven Panorama lounges with the Wi-Fi service.
Parsons has already implemented the Wi-Fi service in two stations, five trains, and four Panorama lounges. Fleet deployment is under way and expected to be complete by November 2006.
