The new contract will primarily cover the provincial capital and major cities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and enable XL to provide mobile service to a greater number of the island’s 45 million inhabitants.
Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide XL with hundreds of new base stations, its Evolium Base Station Subsystem hardware and software, as well as a suite of network integration services, including network optimisation, system support and general project management.
According to Alcatel-Lucent, the project is a key step forward for XL in realising its strategy of expanding its network outside of Java to tap into new subscriber markets and maintain its competitive position.
