ABB has won a $44 million contract from General Electric to supply power equipment for a project to help Qatar meet its growing demand for water and electricity.

meet growing demand for water and electricity.

According to a statement, ABB will provide the complete electrical scope for the extension of a gas-fired power and water plant under construction near the capital Doha. It includes a 220kV gas-insulated substation (GIS) as well as transformers.

The power station, designed to produce 550 megawatts of electricity and 40 million gallons of water from a desalination plant, will be operated for 25 years by Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation, known locally as Kahramaa.

The contract is scheduled to be completed next February, in time to meet peak demand for water and electricity during the Gulf state’s arid summer.?

ABB has won earlier contracts at a neighboring plant, including an order for the installation of instruments for turbines. Electricity generation in Qatar more than doubled in the decade through 2004 and water production has increased 60 percent, fueled by economic growth.
