Mercury buys Sohard

Chelmsford, MA-based Mercury Computer Systems has signed an agreement to purchase Fuerth, Germany-based Sohard for approximately 19 million Euros.

The acquisition, which is subject to certain closing conditions, is expected to close in the third quarter of calendar 2005.

The German company has three business units that focus on medical systems, embedded systems and software development.

In the medical field, it produces a web-based image distribution Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) system that allows users to transfer and edit medical image data. The software,  used by hospitals, is sold through its subsidiary the Radin Group, as well as other OEM partners.

In its embedded systems group, the company develops bespoke hardware and software for OEMs in the medical, automotive and networking field. Its software development arm, on the other hand, focuses on consulting and system services based on Microsoft technologies.

This is the second acquisition in six months for the MA-based Mercury Computer. Last December, it purchased Momentum Computer for around $14 million. The Carlsbad, CA-based company is a developer of single-board computers for telecommunications, defence, medical, and other commercial markets.
