Raytheon and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems have submitted a joint proposal for the systems design and development contract for the US Army’s Mid-Range Munition.
The XM1111 Mid-Range Munition is a precision-guided, 120mm ammunition for guns, which provides dual-mode, beyond-line-of-sight capability for the Future Combat System’s Mounted Combat System. The extended sight capability allows soldiers to hit targets from a greater distance, and the dual-mode seeker uses a digital semi-active laser seeker and an imaging infrared sensor.
Over the last three years, Raytheon has worked closely with the army’s Armament, Development and Engineering Centre at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, and the Office of Program Management for Maneuver Ammunition Systems on a project to enable the development of Mid-Range Munition.
In March 2007, Raytheon successfully demonstrated the dual-mode seeker, which enabled the Mid-Range Munition to hit a T-72 tank from a distance of 5.2km.
Raytheon has delivered more than 1.3m precision-guided munitions during the last 50 years, and General Dynamics has been involved with the development and production of more than three millino 120mm tank cartridges.
