Solar power comes to Italy

German solar module manufacturer Solon has been awarded a contract to construct several large-scale solar power plants in Italy.

German solar module and systems manufacturer Solon has been awarded a contract to construct several large-scale solar power plants in Italy.

The projects will be carried out by Solom's Italian subsidiary, SE Project, on behalf of Veronagest, a renewable power plant developer.

Verona-based Veronagest has already built nearly 100MW of wind power plants in Italy and has an additional 210MW of capacity currently under construction.

The new agreement between Solon and Veronages covers the turnkey construction of several solar power plants in the southern Italian region of Puglia: one 2.4MW plant which will be built by the end of 2008, and five additional plants with nominal capacities of 10MW each in 2008 and 2009.

In addition, an agreement between the two companies contains an option to construct a 100MW plant between 2009 and 2011. Both tracked systems as well as fixed-tilt photovoltaic systems will be used in all the projects.
