A joint venture between Air Liquide and Severstal is to build and operate the world's largest air separation unit.

A joint venture between Air Liquide and Russian steel giant Severstal is to build and operate an air separation unit to meet the oxygen requirements of the Cerepovetz steel making plant, located between Moscow and St Petersburg in the Vologda region.

The joint venture, to be known as ALS, will be funded to the tune of 100 million Euros. Air Liquide will own 75% of the company, Severstal 25%.

The new separation unit, which will be designed and assembled at Cerepovetz by Air Liquide’s engineering department is scheduled for commissioning in the summer of 2007.

It will be the largest air separation unit in Russia and the largest in the world dedicated to steel production.

With a capacity of 3,000 tonnes of oxygen a day, it will supply the steel mill with high purity, high-pressure oxygen, as well as nitrogen and argon.
