Currently powered by LNG (liquid natural gas), the offshore platform supply vessel (PSV) is owned by Norwegian shipping operator Eidesvik and on contract with Norway’s state-owned oil and gas major, Equinor. Finland’s Wärtsilä will supply the vessel with its recently launched Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine as well as the complete fuel gas supply system and exhaust after-treatment needed for the conversion.

According to Wärtsilä, Viking Energy will be the first vessel to deploy the company’s ammonia solution. The PSV is scheduled to be fully converted and operational by 2026.

“In just 25 years – the lifetime of a single vessel – shipping needs to get to net zero emissions,” said Håkan Agnevall, president and CEO of Wärtsilä. “Achieving this will require coordinated action by all maritime industry stakeholders to bring about the system change needed to accept a new generation of sustainable fuels.
