Dreaming of growth

Vietnam Airlines and Vietnam Aircraft Leasing Co (VALC) have placed an order with Boeing worth $2bn at list prices for 12 Boeing 787-8s.

Four of the new aircraft will go directly to Vietnam Airlines, while VALC will purchase the remaining eight Dreamliners and lease them to Vietnam Airlines.

This latest order is Vietnam Airlines’s second order for the 787 Dreamliner. The previous order was for four aircraft in 2005, with the first aeroplane from this order scheduled to be delivered next year.

Vietnam Airlines plans to operate a total of 20 purchased and leased 787s by 2015, and 28 Dreamliners by 2020.

According to Boeing, the 787 will use 20 per cent less fuel than existing aircraft of comparable size, provide up to 45 per cent more cargo revenue capacity and include a new interior with cleaner air, larger windows, more storage space and improved lighting.
