Siemens will deliver and commission the 2.3MW wind turbines, which together will produce around 500MW of power – or enough to supply 150,000 households.
The blades for the units will be manufactured at Siemens’ new production facility in in Fort Madison, Iowa, which Siemens also plans to expand in order to double its present production capacity.
Florida-based FPL Energy is the largest operator of wind farms in the US with 56 farms in 16 states currently in operation.
In 2006 and 2007, Siemens installed wind turbines with a combined capacity of 600MW for the company’s wind farms in Texas, Minnesota and North Dakota.
Together with the new order from FPL, Siemens has received $2.4bn in wind turbine orders in the US this fiscal year.
