ABB says it will supply the 400MW converter system for E.ON’s new 1100MW coal-fired power station, which is under construction in Datteln, to provide electricity to German railways. ABB claims it will be the largest power converter system of this type ever built. ?
The railway power converter system will change the frequency of electricity produced by the E.ON power plant from 50Hz to 16.7Hz to accommodate the lower frequency used by rail systems in central Europe. Rail systems in
ABB will be responsible for engineering, equipment delivery, installation and commissioning of the system, which will be delivered in 2010. The plant is scheduled to start operations in 2011.
