EDF Energies Nouvelles has signed two contracts worth a total of €500m to build wind farms in central and northern Portugal.
The Alto Minho project, worth €325m, will result in the largest wind farm in Europe, supplying a power of 240 megawatts. The second contract, worth €175m, covers the construction of the 112MW Arada wind farm, based in the centre of Portugal.
Located on the Spanish border, the Alto Minho farm, with its 120 turbines, will be the largest onshore wind energy plant in Europe with a single grid connection point. EDF Energies Nouvelles, which owns 42.5 per cent of the project, will work with Spanish group Endesa and Portuguese group DST.
Alternately, the Arada wind farm will have 56 wind turbines, and is wholly-owned by EDF Energies Nouvelles.
The wind farms are scheduled to enter service in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
The contract makes EDF Energies Nouvelles the sixth largest wind energy company in Portugal, where it has already developed plants producing 144MW.
